The hype surrounding Daniel Jones has jumped after the rookie quarterback’s first NFL preseason functionality.
Jones, who had been selected sixth overall in the 2019 NFL draft, had a good debut with the New York Giants, heading 5-for-5 for 67 yards and a touchdown pass. This led to his 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds improving radically.
Additionally, it hastens speculation about who’ll be the beginning for the Giants in Week 1 — that the rookie pivot or two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning. Consequently, that headed the oddsmakers at BetOnline to post a collection of prop bets involving the two possible starters.
Here is a breakdown of all the prop bets out there.
* All chances herein collected on 08/12/2019.
While Manning is a heavy favorite to begin the year as the Giants’ starting QB, other odds suggest the two-time Super Bowl MVP will not be able to keep the job for very long.
BetOnline is providing an enticing -140 line that Jones may have more passing yards than Manning when everything is done and said.
There are reasons to believe that may be the case. The Giants took a great deal of heat for picking Jones so large from the draft, so the team will probably be happy to show the naysayers wrong.
But it’s hard to ignore the fact that Manning is coming off a 4,299 passing yard season, ??marking the fourth time in five seasons he’s posted 4,000 or more passing yards.
Select: Eli Manning (+100)
Manning hasn’t been a touchdown-machine. His most successful period came between 2013 and 2015, averaging 27.7 touchdowns a year during that span. In 2015, Manning threw for a career-best 35 TD passes — many of which have been captured by Odell Beckham Jr..
However, Manning’s touchdown manufacturing skyrocketed within the last few years projecting 19 and 21 in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Jones has much more upside to throw touchdowns, making the -120 cost worth carrying.
Select: Daniel Jones (-120)
Manning has been in a position to maintain his interceptions comparatively low year annually, but using the Giants rebuilding its roster, expect the pick-offs to grow substantially in what’s predicted to be a rough season at New York.
Jones is a -200 favorite to have more interceptions, however there is more value in gambling on Manning at +150.
Manning has held that a 13.6 interception average over the past five years, but should finish somewhere in the selection of 18-20 with this Giants team.
That should be enough to open the doorway for Jones, but by then the damage will have been completed.
Select: Eli Manning (+150)
BetOnline considers Manning will begin more games to the Giants, listing the future Hall of Fame QB since the -150 favorite.
Manning will without question be the Giants’ starting quarterback to start the 2019 NFL season and ought to continue to keep the occupation for at least 7-8 weeks.
However, the doorway will likely be open for Jones to take more if the Giants are still winless or have a lousy record by Week 8 or 7.
There is much more value in taking Jones in +110 to start more games this year.
Head coach Pat Shurmur will start looking for the smallest of windows to formally begin the Daniel Jones era, giving the reigns to the beginner QB whilst at the same time using Manning as a mentor.
Manning is an ironman of types — missing only one regular-season game in 14 decades, but as the Giants rebuild, they will want Jones to be the No. 1 man sooner than later.
Pick: Daniel Jones (+100)
Let’s have fun and keep it civil.
