England will not be discouraged from taking Jack Nowell into the World Cup despite the latest setback that forced the Exeter wing to undergo emergency operation in Treviso.
Nowell run of luck continued in the squad’s training camp at north-east Italy past Wednesday, when gut discomfort saw him admitted to a hospital.
That evening his appendix was removed and it wasn’t till four nights later that he had been released to continue his comeback, many kilograms lighter and with a ferocious appetite.
This was the latest twist in a story of woe that has prevented him from taking part in the three World Cup warm-up games staged so far.
A foot injury sustained during the Gallagher Premiership closing on June 2 led to operation and, after having a complication during his rehab, Exeter manager Rob Baxter announced he is”touch and go” to become ready for Japan.
However, England have signaled he will go to the Far East regardless of the appendix difficulty in the anticipation , at that time that the Pool C games from Argentina and France have been all staged, he is going to be healthy and at full fitness.
As his blockbusting performance in the Premiership final signaled, Nowell is a flexible player who repeatedly breaks tackles. If fit, he’s a certainty for Eddie Jones’ matchday 23.
“Jack’s already been’gutsing’ it a little. He is a personality that is fantastic, a bugger and not a lot gets down him. But he’s hungry and nice!” Defence coach John Mitchell explained.
“He is at our World Cup squad. We are going to be backing Jack. We are no different to lots of squads. Everyone’s got bits and niggles and pieces. You have got to reunite and encourage that threat.
“There is always risk. We’ve got to back our approaches, our intuition and our own instincts instead of falling into the trap of being hasty.
“At this stage in time we again Jack and we are going to support him to reach that point. We wouldn’t be doing exactly what we are doing unless we thought that is how he’s heading.”
Last month speaking at the World Cup team announcement of England, Nowell disclosed the accidents that have plagued his Test career have taken an emotional toll.
“Within the previous couple of years if I’m honest I have really, really struggled with my injuries,” Nowell said.
“Normally I am pretty positive and will find something to work , but I have really struggled.
“You are feeling a little that you are letting them down that you can not be out there all of the time.
“You play as you would like to play every single game so to be advised, or for your own body to tell you that you can not play would be the most bothersome thing.
“After I tore my hamstring in practice from the autumn international I didn’t really believe it.
“The physios were telling me and the scans had been still telling me but it was killing me to be advised I would be out for six or seven weeks. I had been in captivity.”
The Exeter team-mate Henry Slade of nowell seems unlikely to play against Italy continues his recovery from a knee injury.
Slade has also missed the double-header from Wales and also rout of Ireland to confront him with the prospect of entering the World Cup with no minute of game time at the bank since the Premiership closing on June 1.
After recovering from a hamstring injury wing Ruaridh McConnochie is expected to make his debut.
