Joe Denly has Verified That he will open for England at the fourth Ashes Test match at Old Trafford with Jason Roy Falling down to No 4.
Denly batted at # 2 in Antigua in his very first Test match for Joe Root’s side against the West Indies.
The moved down in his next red-ball game in St Lucia to No 3, hitting his inaugural Test to help put up a victory.
“I got a call from (captain) Joe Root after a bit of time off and that he said he’d like me to go at the peak of the purchase and attempt to catch us off to a fantastic start,” he is reported to have stated by PA Media. “Obviously Jason (Roy) is going to bat four and that is terrific for English cricket.
“With Jason Roy at the team we are a better team and with him coming in at four, hopefully with the new ball worn off and myself and Rory Burns performing our job on very top, it allows him to come in and play his own way. He’s a great player to have there.”
But, Denly batted at No 3 in the first innings against Ireland at Lord prior to England captain Root opted to transfer a spot in the batting line-up at the beginning of the Ashes forcing the Kent batsman to no 4.
He shared an important 126-run third-wicket venture with Root at the final innings of the third Test at Headingley, making a hard-fought fifty off 155 balls to help stabilise England’s record chase.
Meanwhile, Roy has struggled from the new ball throughout the series against Australia, where he’s scored just 57 runs in six innings with a high score of 28, having been brought in for the show following his opening heroics in cricket.
