Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes home advantage might be critical in his side’s Carabao Cup fourth-round associate with Manchester United, but is cautious of bettering their out-of-form competitions.
Chelsea thrashed Grimsby 7-1 on Tuesday Wednesday to provide Lampard his initial success at Stamford Bridge since taking control in July at the club where he spent the bulk of his playing career.
United, who have won just once in the league since beating Chelsea 4-0 about the opening weekend of the season, fought to some penalty-shootout victory over League One Rochdale in Old Trafford.
“I was only watching the penalties. It’s a major attraction, two significant teams and I am happy we are at home. We are going to see,” Lampard said of this tie, which will take place on the week commencing October 28.
“I feel a lot can happen in soccer in a brief time. Tomorrow the round isn’t coming. We must respect the fact they have great players.
“They beat us 4-0… so I’m surely not going to stay here and speak Man United down.
“It’s going to be a hard game, and the attractiveness of the things we did in Wednesday night will make the sport seem pretty easy.
“But these games could be tough and I would preferably, from a distance and never not watched the match, provide Rochdale charge for taking them all of the way. Man United will bring a strong team .”
Ross Barkley opened the scoring for Chelsea after only four minutes, before Michy Batshuayi’s brace, Pedro’s punishment, Kurt Zouma, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi finished the rout.
But the larger picture was Lampard handing debuts into four academy graduates in addition to a first launch for Billy Gilmour.
Gilmour was a mythical celebrity in midfield and fellow rookies James and Marc Guehi too impressed, while there was a welcome return for England winger Hudson-Odoi, his first appearance since picking up an Achilles injury in April.
After Lampard delivered on two more debutants as substitutes, Tino Anjorin and also Ian Maatsen, the Blues ended the night with six academy starlets over the pitch.
“I am happy some players who have not been playing so many minutes playedthere were several debuts, along with the young lads who came on enhanced the team that was nice,” Lampard added.
